This week a number of the world’s best bartenders have competed against each other in Moscow, Russia, to win the prestigious Bacardí Legacy cocktail competition. Unfortunately none of the Nordic bartenders managed to reach the finals, instead it was the representatives from Australia, UAE, Cyprus, New Zealand, China, India, Estonia and the UK who had the chance to win this year’s title. In the end, it was Tom Walker, working at the American Bar/The Savoy who impressed the judges the most with his Maid in Cuba cocktail and performance during the last couple of days – congratulations mate, well done!

I had the pleasure of attending Tom’s guest apperance at Little Quarter here in Stockholm earlier this year, and I can definitely confirm that Maid in Cuba is a delicious cocktail which deserves to become a classic – and here’s how to make it at home!
Maid in Cuba
60 ml Bacardi Superior
45 ml sweet and sour mix
6 leaves of mint
3 slices of cucumber
50 ml soda
Sweet and sour mix
1 part sugar syrup (2:1), 2 parts lime juice – infused together for half a day
Muddle cucumber into a boston shaker, add mint and the rest of the ingredients except absinthe and soda. Add a block of ice to shaker, shake hard, double strain into an absinthe spritzed coupette, top with soda. Garnish with cucumber and mint sprig.

Bacardí is also celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and for this occasion the company decided to create the new Untameable campaign. Apparently, Don Facundo Bacardí Massó was onto something back in 1862 as the company is still in business, maybe stronger than ever. Here’s to 150 more years, salud!
