Quick review: Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. Small Batch Tonic

Quick review: Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. Small Batch Tonic
Gin & Tonic

Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. is an American company founded in 2010. Bartender Brooks Reitz made and served his popular “handmade tonic” in the bar he was working in, and together with a co-worker he decided to start bottling and selling it. Nowadays they have some other products in their range as well, and since a while back they have distribution in Sweden via Gourmet Food.

Recommended proportions are 1 part tonic syrup to 5 parts of well carbonated soda water.

Sipped on its own, there’s a prominent sweetness and the taste is dominated by lemongrass and a nice citrusy tartness. Surprisingly enough, I can’t really find much bitterness from the quinine.

Gin & Tonic
60 ml Beefeater Gin
20 ml Jack Rudy Small Batch Tonic
100 ml Club Soda

Store the gin in the freezer and pour directly into a glass with one large ice cube, add the Small Batch Tonic and stir before adding chilled club soda. Stir again gently and garnish with a lemon zest.

The result is a refreshing and delicious drink, but for me the syrup is somewhat too sweet, too heavy on the citrus and lacking in bitterness. Even though I might not think it’s ideal in a Gin & Tonic, it’s indeed a tasty, well made syrup and should work wonders in other, more suitable cocktails – I’m pretty sure I’ll find proper use for it! I noticed on their website that they also have launched “Extra Bitter Tonic” on the UK market, and that sounds more like my cup of tea.
