Review: Gibson’s Exception London Dry Gin

Trader MagnusSeptember 4, 2020January 14, 2021

The regular Gibson’s London Dry Gin was the third most sold gin in the Swedish monopoly stores last year. It comes in two different sizes, 70cl and the cute 20cl bottle, and it’s a pretty cheap, straightforward  and good value for money product.

I came home from the weekend getaway, and what did I find if not the brand new @ahusakvavit cocktail book with recipes inspired by New York, Malmö and London – can't wait to delve into it!
Hmm.. choices, choices... the books you find in the cottage.
In the cottage over the weekend, trying out some local stuff! Both gins and tonics from @sahlinsbrygghus are pretty tasty, but how do they work together? I have to say that for me the lingonberry tonic and dry juniper gin was the best fit, and rhubarb tonic with pine floral gin. The taste test continues, some more combinations to try...
Can't wait for tomorrow's online @michterswhiskey tasting ❤️❤️
When life gives you passionfruit, make passionfruit syrup and then make Hurricanes – funky jamaican navy strength rum, passionfruit syrup and freshly squeezed lemon juice... dry shake and pour into tacky souvenir Hurricane glass (mine from @officialbubbagump Chicago) filled with crushed ice – garnish with an umbrella, paper straw and a swizzlestick of choice (this one from my @smugglerscovesf visit) – cheers!
Enjoying the latest issue of @discardthezine together with an Age Of Aquarius – mezcal, Campari, lime, passionfruit syrup and honey syrup, poured over crushed ice. Cheers!
The Sunday cocktail is Freight Train Swizzle – a succulent rum rhapsody by @samueljoelross at @attaboy134 with 40 ml aged rum, 20 ml lime, 20 ml Falernum and 20 ml green Chartreuse, swizzled with crushed ice until ice cold then 3 dashes Angostura bitters on top... garnish with mint sprig (omitted) and freshly grated nutmeg – happy times!
I was asked by @thelittlequarterrevival to make a tribute to the one and only Little Quarter bar in Stockholm.. you are certainly missed! From the January "classics" menu I chose The Bee's Knees which is simple but oh so delicious! 7cl gin, 3cl lemon juice, 2cl honey syrup – shake with ice and strain into chilled cocktail coupe.. garnish with an orange twist. Voilà!
I'm a sucker for new tonics, and I was surprised to find a new Swedish brand in the supermarket – @urbanpeers.se – and while pretty good and citrusy I found it a bit too gentle, at least paired with @tanqueraygin with a 1:2 ratio. Now i'm curious about their "French" tonic 😉
This week's Friday cocktail is Ninth Wonder – sweet, sour and spicy by @hungrybartender. Equal parts tequila (I didn't have any so I used mezcal), @anchoreyes, creme de cacao and lime shaken with ice and strained into cocktail glass – and wow, it certainly hits the spot!
Did I tell you that my first name is John? A while ago I received a surprise package with this lovely bottle of @famousgrouse with my name on it.. it's just that my moniker is Trader Magnus and not Trader John... oh well, A for effort and the liquid is still the same... so, this week's Friday cocktail is a Penicillin with mezcal instead of Islay whisky... yum! Ginger syrup and candied ginger courtesy of @klasapa – cheers!
Jungle Bird definitely is one of my favorite drinks, I prefer to use Cruzan Black Strap rum but my bottle is almost empty and it's not easy to get here in Sweden.. 😭
