When I was in Gothenburg on November 3, there was a festival called Aquavit Day at Kajskjul 8, as the name suggests entirely dedicated to aquavit. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend, but I thought I’d at least let you guys know about the first annual O.P. Open cocktail competition which took place during the festival.
The challenge was to create an innovative cocktail using O.P. Anderson Aquavit, which is Sweden’s oldest aquavit and was created in Gothenburg in 1891. Twelve bartenders competed against each other, and according to the judges Tom Surma (bar manager at Restaurang Familjen), Joel Katzenstein (Purfict) and Tobias Q Oldenfeldt (bar manager at Avalon Hotel) the most impressive cocktail was made by Mikael Eliasson from Restaurang Familjen – congratulations!

Snus & Ek
30 ml O.P. Anderson Aquavit bottle-aged with American oak cubes for one week
10 ml Del Professore Vermouth
2 lemon zests
1 portion of cumin, aniseed and fennel “snus”
Stir the liquids with ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with two lemon zests. The snus should be under the upper lip while sipping.
The jury’s motivation: “He has in simple and playful manners created a drink which incorporates the spirit of Gothenburg in an unexpected way. The multi-layered taste experience is out of the ordinary and definitely separates the drink from the rest.”
